Can Strategy Games Really Work on a Phone?

Strategy on mobile has a reputation problem. Too many games cram desktop interfaces onto a screen the size of a playing card, then wonder why it feels awful. We spent a week with several to see who got it right.

Ironline Command stood out because it designed around the touch, not against it. Dragging to reroute a convoy and long-pressing to set an ambush feels native, like the controls were born on glass. Nothing important is buried three menus deep.

The lesson seems to be subtraction. The best mobile strategy games remove the micromanagement that needs a mouse and keep the decisions that make strategy fun. Fewer units, bigger consequences.

If you've bounced off mobile strategy before, it might not be the genre's fault. Try one built for the format from the start. The difference in comfort is night and day.

We're cautiously optimistic. The tools are there; developers just have to resist porting instead of designing.
